Ideas of how to stop this from writing to error_log? Gets real big, real fast!

server is set not to record- host is saying must be the script.

If server is set no to log these notices then it should not log them. SEF Advance for Joomla 1.0 is now 10 years old. Joomla 1.0 is also deprecated. It was never meant to be run on PHP 5.3. So the only solution is really to make your server not to log these notices.
