404 page selected but go to homepage instead

hi. installed on joomla 2.5 and all working great but when i select the article i want the 404 page to go to i instead end up going to homepage and nothing is getting logged ... help please

i've had to switch SEF advance off as the contact link was going to contact not found too .. when you want it back on reply and i'll switch it back on
have turned on notification of reply to this thread too
