Wrong permissions

I have just reactivated an Ajax Register page on a site and it is registering people as 'Registered' not 'Author', which is what the Joomla default and the Ajax Register override is set to.

I thought this might be a version issue as my copy was over a year old, but I have just bought a new licence and updated it. Still has the same problem.

Any ideas?
