Albums View problem in backend

Hi,
AJAX Photo Album is great. It worked fine for me on my test server. But when I went to install it on my live server, I was unable to define a root folder.
I put a folder that exists into the configuration field, but when I switch to the Albums tab, there's nothing but a long narrow rectangle with nothing in it. No directory tree on the left, no New Del or Thumbs buttons at the bottom, no file field, Browse Upload or Delete buttons either. Just the Joomla version footer.
Joomla Version is 1.0.13 Stable (same as test server). Ioncube installed fine. Site lives in a content subfolder off the domain root, so my root folder is setup as "content/images/stories/{two more levels}". I've tried defining other folders as the root but the end result is the same: nothing on the Albums tab.
The root directory "seems" to be setup correctly, because on the Preferences tab I see the correct subfolders as they appear under the Root in the Start Directory drop down. I just don't see the Root or any of the folders (or any of the buttons) in the Albums view.
Are there any known conflicts with other components? The live site has VirtueMart installed but not published, whereas the test site did not. That's about the only difference between the two.
I searched but couldn't find any mention of anything like this in the Forums or FAQ. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim
